Expected service life of dry type transformers
Electricians and factory engineers often inquire about the service life of dry-type transformers. The simple answer is, 'Until they are scrapped.' However, this answer may cause a 'click' sound on the other end of the phone line. In this case, we are talking about universal dry air cooled transformers, 208, 240, and 480 volts. These transformers are ubiquitous in manufacturing facilities. For most people, they are just metal shells that warm up and make interesting buzzing sounds in winter. We were asked if they can be used for 25 years or longer.
The biggest enemies of air-cooled dry-type transformers are roof leaks and forklifts. The service life of transformers exceeds 25 years. But don't let them get wet, dirty, bumped or buried by 'things'. They don't like water or heat. If ventilation is obstructed, they may overheat, thereby shortening their reliable life expectancy. Therefore, if your universal dry air-cooled transformer is kept dry, clean, and well ventilated, it may last for 30, 40, or even 50 years of use. It should continue until your retirement, which has become the latest standard for many electricians and factory engineers. In addition, these transformers may appear harmless, but they are very dangerous and deadly if they explode or if something gets stuck inside the casing.
