The oil immersed transformer is most commonly used as electrical equipment for power transmission in power plants, power grid transmission and distribution stations, and industrial and commercial substations.


1、 What is an oil immersed transformer?

Oil immersed transformer, also known as oil immersed transformer, is a transformer device that uses oil cooling to reduce the temperature of the transformer. Unlike dry transformers, the main body of an oil immersed transformer is installed in a welded steel oil tank filled with insulating oil. When an oil immersed transformer is in operation, the heat from the coil and iron core is first converted into insulating oil and then into cooling medium. According to the capacity, it can be divided into immersed Free cooling transformer and immersed forced air cooling transformer.

2、 The structure and working principle of oil immersed transformers

Oil immersed transformers are structurally similar to transformers It is one of the types of transformers classified according to the insulation form of the iron core. Therefore, it has recognizable features of oil immersed coils, which can reduce the heat map of the equipment inside.

The basic components of the oil immersed type are composed of magnetic cores, windings, and bushings. The magnetic core provides a path for magnetic flux. The winding creates a magnetic field consisting of a conductor coil wound around an iron core and insulated with a cardboard barrier and shielding layer. The thickness of the winding insulation layer increases with increasing voltage. The bushing connects the transformer winding to the substation.


Oil type transformers are used for power distribution or substations. Their core and coils are immersed in oil, which can cool and insulate. Oil circulates through the pipes in the coil and around the coil and iron core components through convection. The oil is cooled externally by the fuel tank at low rated values, and by an air-cooled radiator at high rated values.

3、 Types of oil immersed transformers

There are two main types of oil immersed transformers: single-phase transformer and three-phase transformer.

4、 Purpose of using oil immersed transformers

5、 Precautions for using oil-immersed transformers

Structural characteristics of oil immersed transformer:

1.Iron core:

The iron core is made of high-permeability ferromagnetic grain-oriented cold-rolled silicon steel sheet.

2. Winding:

The winding adopts corrugated winding around the oil passage, no paint dipping process, and tightening tape binding. The windings are all concentric coils. The high-voltage winding has a tap corresponding to the tap voltage requirement and leads to the tap switch. The switch is installed on the box cover, and the tap voltage can be changed only after the power supply is cut off.

3 Full protection device:

10~2000kVA transformers are equipped with pressure relief valves.

According to user requirements, a gas relay with alarm and trip terminals can be installed.

4. Oil temperature measuring device:

The transformer is equipped with a tube socket of a glass thermometer. The tube socket is set on the top of the oil tank and extends into the oil by 120±10mm;

5. Transformer oil tank:

The transformer oil tank is composed of corrugated walls, and the surface is sprayed with dust and the paint film is firm. The corrugated heat sink not only has a cooling function, but also has a "breathing" function. The elasticity of the corrugated heat sink can compensate for the change in transformer oil volume caused by temperature rise and fall. Therefore, the fully sealed transformer has no oil conservator, which reduces the overall height of the transformer;

When the transformer is packaged, a vacuum oil injection process is used to completely remove the moisture in the transformer. The oil of the transformer does not come into contact with the air, which effectively prevents oxygen and moisture from invading the transformer, which may lead to the deterioration of the transformer insulation performance and the aging of the transformer oil. Therefore, it is not necessary to conduct oil sample tests on a regular basis.
