What are the advantages of vacuum circuit breakers?

May 20, 2022

Vacuum circuit breakers use vacuum as an arc extinguishing and insulating medium. Its advantages mainly include the following four points:

1. The vacuum circuit breaker uses vacuum diffusion to extinguish the arc, and has a high breaking capacity (also known as the self-energy arc extinguishing method). When the circuit breaker is in the opening position, if there is a breakdown between the contacts, it will have the same breaking capacity as when the circuit breaker is open. Therefore, developing faults and multiple lightning strikes do not pose a threat to the vacuum circuit breaker and can still be disconnected.

2. The arc voltage of the vacuum circuit breaker is very low, and the electrical wear between the contacts is very slight. As long as the contact burnout is not greater than the allowable burnout amount, but the circuit breaker can meet the specified withstand voltage requirements, the circuit breaker still has the ability to open and break arcs.

3. No harmful gas is generated, easy to assemble and simple to maintain.

4. The arc extinguishing chamber adopts a contact structure with strong electromagnetic thrust to the arc to drive the arc to rotate at a high speed, prevent the arc from burning in a concentrated manner, and force the arc to extinguish when the current naturally crosses zero. The arc extinguishing chamber structure has good heat dissipation effect, uniform electric field distribution, and is not affected by other factors.
